Indexing and search utilities

For increased performance, uninstall any disk indexing utilities or services such as

Windows Search, Windows Desktop Search or Windows Indexing Service.

Windows Search, Windows Desktop Search or Windows Indexing Service: To

remove:

1. From the Windows Control Panel, click on the Add or Remove Programs icon

and scroll down the list to see if Windows Search, Windows Desktop Search or

any other indexing or search utility is installed. If so, click program and click

Change/Remove.

2. Also from the Windows Control Panel, click on the Add/Remove Windows

Components icon and make sure the Indexing Service box is not checked.

3. Double-click My Computer and right-click on the C: drive icon. Click

Properties. Remove the check mark from the Allow Indexing Service to index

this disk for fast file searching check box.

Prefetch: To disable Prefetch:

1. Go to Start -> Run and type Regedit. The Registry Editor Dialog Box opens.

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\

Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters and click on

EnablePrefetcher

3. Change the number in the Value data box to 0.

4. Click OK

SuperFetch (Vista only):

1. Go to Control Panel -> Services or type services.msc into the Start menu

search or run boxes. The Services window opens.

2. Double-click on Superfetch in the list. The SuperFetch properties.

3. change the drop-down to Disabled. You can also click Stop to immediately turn

it off.

4. Click OK

Bridge Connections

To prevent non-Secure Managed Client clients from acquiring IP addresses from

the Secure Managed Client clients, make sure that no networks are bridged. To do

this:

1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections and right-click on your

active connections.

2. Make sure that the connection used for Secure Managed Client is not bridged

to any other network connection.

To control all network settings, use Windows Group Policy.

Defragmentation

Windows Vista contains an active defragmentation schedule which is every

Wednesday at 12 PM. It is important that all defragmentation schedules are

disabled (either third party or operating system based) for the following reasons:

v If a scheduled defragmentation happens during peak work hours, the Secure

Managed Client environment will be slow.

v Defragmentation of the hard disk drive can also cause Volume Shadow Copy

(Volsnaps) to slow down Secure Managed Client performance.

v When using the local cache feature of Secure Managed Client v2.0,

defragmentation changes where many of the files are stored on the local copy of
