PriortoinstallingtheRescueandRecoveryprogram,youcancustomizetheRescueandRecoveryXML
leforyourenterpriseandthendeployittoclientsystems.TheXMLlepackagedwiththeRescueand
Recoveryprogramisnamedrnrdeploy.xml.OncetheXMLleiscustomizedandinstalled,settingsforthe
RescueandRecoveryprogramaremanagedwiththeregistryorActiveDirectory.Formoreinformation,

Installationconsiderations
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramhastwomaininterfaces.TheprimaryinterfaceoperatesintheMicrosoft
Windowsenvironment.Thesecondaryinterface,whichistheRescueandRecoveryPredesktopArea,
operatesindependentlyoftheWindowsoperatingsystem,intheWindowsPEenvironment.
TheRescueandRecovery4.5programsupportstheWindows7operatingsystemonly.However,itdoes
notsupporttheWindows7operatingsystemthatisupgradedfromtheWindowsXPorWindowsVista®
operatingsystem.
TheWindowsInstallerprogramsupportsupgradingtheRescueandRecovery4.30programorlaterversions
totheRescueandRecovery4.5program.However,allsettingswillnotbepreservedduringtheupgrade.
ItisrecommendedtomakeanewbackupafterinstallingtheRescueandRecovery4.5programonyour
Windows7operatingsystem.Youcanmakethebackupbyusingeitherascriptortheuserinterface.
Notes:
1.TheRescueandRecoveryprogramonlyworkswiththenon-BIOSversionofComputraceiftheRescue
andRecoveryprogramisinstalledrst,andthenComputraceisinstalled.
2.TheStorageManagementSubsystemcannotbeinstalledonacomputerthathastheRescueand
RecoveryprograminstalledwiththeWindowsPEareaalreadyinstalledasavirtualpartition.Both
WindowsPEandStorageManagementSubsystemusetheC:\minintdirectoryfortheirlesystems.The
waytohavebothinstalledatthesametimeistoinstalltheRescueandRecoveryprogramasatype

forinstructions.ThispracticeisapplicableforMBRsystemsonly.
3.ApossiblesecurityriskmaybecreatedwhentheMicrosoftRecoveryConsoleisinstalledonasystem
withtheRescueandRecoveryprogram.MicrosoftRecoveryConsolelooksforallfolderswiththepath
C:\*\system32\cong\andifitndsthatpathitassumesitisanoperatingsystem.Iftheregistryentries
thatrequireaWindowspasswordarenotpresent,thenrecoveryconsolewillallowausertochoosethe
operatingsystemandthengainaccesstotheentireharddrivewithoutneedingtoenterapassword.
InstallingtheRescueandRecoveryprogram
TheRescueandRecoveryinstallationpackagewasdevelopedwithInstallShield10.5PremierasaBasic
MSIproject.InstallShieldPremier10.5usestheWindowsInstallertoinstallapplications,whichgives
administratorsmanycapabilitiestocustomizeinstallations,suchassettingpropertyvaluesfromthe
commandline.ThischapterdescribeswaystouseandruntheRescueandRecoverysetuppackage.Fora
