Chapter1.Overview
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramrepresentsauniquecombinationofThinkVantageTechnologies.This
integratedapplicationprovidesasuiteofpowerfultoolsthatcanbeusedeveniftheMicrosoftWindows
operatingsystemwillnotstart.
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramhasthefollowingfeatures:
•TheRescueandRecoveryPredesktopAreaprovidesanenvironmenttostartyourcomputerwhenyou
failtologintotheWindowsoperatingsystem.
•TheRescueandRecoveryWindowsenvironmentenablesyoutobackuptheoperatingsystemandles
andrestoretheoperatingsystemandlesinfamiliarinterfaces.
•TheRescueandRecoveryprogramenablesyoutostorebackuplesonexternalUSBstoragedevices,
suchasUSBashdrivesandUSBharddiskdrives.
•TheRescueandRecoveryprogramenablesyoutostorethebackupdataofmultiplecomputersonone
storagedevice.
TheRescueandRecoveryprogramincludestheoptiontoswitchtoasimplieduserinterfacewithafew
basicoperations,orstaywiththeadvanceduserinterfacewithextendedoptions.Formoreinformationon

Note:SomefeaturesofRescueandRecoveryrunundertheWindowsoperatingsystem.Insomeinstances,
thesysteminformationusedintheRescueandRecoveryenvironmentisgatheredwhileWindowsis
running.IftheWindowsoperatingsystemdoesnotfunctioncorrectly,thiswillnotpreventtheRescueand
Recoveryenvironmentfromoperatingnormally.WindowsfunctionsarenotconguredintheRescueand
Recoveryenvironment.
TheRescueandRecovery4.5programsupportsbothlegacyandUniedExtensibleFirmwareInterface
(UEFI)bootmodes,whichmeansitsupportsbothMasterBootRecord(MBR)systemsandGUIDPartition
Table(GPT)systems.YoucanselectthedesiredbootmodeintheBasicInput/OutputSystem(BIOS).

TheRescueandRecoveryPredesktopAreaprovidesanemergencyworkspaceforuserswhoareunable
tostartWindowsontheircomputers.RunningunderWindowsPE(PreinstallationEnvironment),the
environmentofferstheWindowslook,feel,andfunctionandhelpsuserssolveproblemswithoutconsuming
ITstafftime.StartingfromtheRescueandRecovery4.5program,WindowsPEthatisusedbyalloperating
systemshasbeenupgradedtothe64–bitversionandallprogramsunderWindowsPEare64–bitversions.
Therefore,themicroprocessoryouuseshouldsupportthe64–bitarchitecture.
